After a long partecipative process, the first eco-region in Portugal was born in Idanha a Nova. On February 20, 2018, in the presence of the Secretary of State for Rural Development, formal ceremony of adhesion of the Bio-district of Idanha in Nova to the IN.N.E.R. Network, represented by the President Salvatore Basile and the councillors Emilio Buonomo and Custodio Oliveira. The latter has the merit of having studied with great professionalism the phenomenon of eco-regions, also making a study trip to the Bio-district of Cilento (Italy). When he returned to Portugal, he put the experience he had acquired at the service of his country, which has all the requirements to play a leading role in the spread of eco-regions in Europe.
On May 11, 2018, the International Conference was held at the Braga Forum, during which the constitution of the Portuguese network of INNER eco-regions was presented.
On June 9, 2018, a report on eco-regions was broadcast on Portuguese TV with a special broadcast of the Biosphere.
From 17 to 21 July 2019 Idanha in Nova hosted the first World Congress of eco-regions, as part of the FISAS International Forum on relevant territories for sustainable food systems.
